Rare Birds of Northern Belize, Recorded at Chan Chich

If you're the kind of birder who checks a lodge's eBird hotspot before you check its room rates, here's what you'll find on ours. The Ornate Hawk-Eagle, Rose-throated Tanager, Agami Heron, and Lovely Cotinga are all logged on the public record for Chan Chich Lodge's reserve in northern Belize, dates and all. So is the Ocellated Turkey, which is the odd one out on this list, mostly because it doesn't bother hiding.

What the Record Actually Shows

These are the most recent entries on Chan Chich's eBird hotspot (L10348352) as of early September 2026, and they shift every time a guide files a new checklist.

  • Ornate Hawk-Eagle. Recorded here in all twelve months of the year, most recently in late August 2026.

  • Rose-throated Tanager. Also recorded in every month of the year, most recently in early August 2026. The Rose-throated Becard shows up on the same hotspot, so the two are easy to mix up by name even though they're entirely different birds.

  • Agami Heron. Recorded in ten months of the year, most recently in late August 2026. Neither September nor October has ever produced a record of one here.

  • Lovely Cotinga. Last recorded in March 2025, the only one of these five with nothing logged in 2026, and there's no August or September record for it in any year. We'd rather tell you that upfront than have you find it yourself on the hotspot.

  • Ocellated Turkey. Recorded in all twelve months of the year, most recently in late August 2026. Unlike the other four, this one doesn't stay deep in the rainforest. It wanders the lawns and around the cabanas, so the strange part isn't spotting one, it's remembering that something this striking is standing a few feet from where you're having breakfast.

  • Two More Raptors Worth Knowing About. Two birds of prey round out the list, both drawn from the same public hotspot. The Aplomado Falcon is on record at Chan Chich in nine months of the year, with no June, July, or September entries. The Peregrine Falcon shows up in six months, October through March, and hasn't been logged here outside that window in any year.

Why are these birds in the Rainforest of Belize?

Chan Chich's 30,000 acres are one connected stretch of rainforest in northwestern Belize, not an island. To the north and east, the reserve borders Programme for Belize's Rio Bravo Conservation and Management Area, itself roughly 230,000 acres, and in 2021 a coalition of conservation groups added another 236,000 acres to that same corridor under the Belize Maya Forest Trust. Rainforest that connects to more rainforest is what lets birds like these move through it and hold territory in it, and set against that much protected ground on our doorstep, Chan Chich's own 30,000 acres is a piece of something far larger, not the whole of it. There's one lodge on this reserve, and the roads belong to it, which has a lot to do with why the record above exists at all.

Check the Record Yourself

We'd rather you verify this than just take our word for it. The full list, 371 species and counting, is public on eBird under hotspot L10348352, and it's kept current by the people actually walking these trails. Luis Romero, who has guided here for more than thirty years, has filed more checklists to that hotspot than anyone else, 712 of them, and sits second on the list for total species logged, with 324.

If you're thinking about coming, tell us when and how long you have, and we'll tell you what the guides have been finding lately.
