International Jaguar Day at Chan Chich Lodge

International Jaguar Day at Chan Chich Lodge

Observed every November 29th, International Jaguar Day is a global call to protect one of the Americas' most iconic predators. As an apex and keystone species, the jaguar keeps the ecosystems it moves through in balance, yet habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching have shrunk its range dramatically since it once roamed freely from the southern United States to Argentina. Belize remains one of the few countries where that range hasn't been lost, and nowhere is that more true than in the rainforest surrounding Chan Chich Lodge.

A Refuge Three Decades in the Making

Every day feels a little like Jaguar Day at Chan Chich Lodge. Hidden deep within Belize's Maya Forest, our lodge and the surrounding 30,000-acre Gallon Jug Estate form one of Central America's most important refuges for these cats. For more than three decades, the estate has protected old-growth rainforest, and because it connects to wider protected land across northern Belize, including the 236,000-acre Belize Maya Forest secured in 2021 by Gallon Jug Estate and more than a dozen conservation partners, it helps maintain a continuous corridor where jaguars can roam safely well beyond our own boundaries.

Nine Jaguars, Each One Known by Their Spots

What sets Chan Chich apart isn't just that jaguars live here, it's how well we've come to know them. Our guiding team has identified nine individual jaguars in the reserve, each one distinguished by its unique spot pattern the way a fingerprint identifies a person. Trail cameras positioned throughout the property, along with pumas, ocelots, margays, jaguarundis, and tapirs moving through the same trails, have captured footage of all five of Belize's wild cat species on camera, a rare distinction for any single reserve in the country. That data does more than make for a good guest presentation,it helps our team and visiting researchers track jaguar presence, understand territory ranges that can stretch nine to ten square miles per cat, and guide long-term habitat management decisions. Take a look at our trail cameras here.

Experience It for Yourself

Direct sightings are rare, (but possible!), given how elusive jaguars are, but the signs are everywhere. Fresh tracks on a morning walk, a distant call after dusk, or a trail camera photo shared by your guide. Guided jungle hikes and wildlife night drives put you in the same landscape the jaguar calls home, and guests can join our trail camera presentation to see footage and learn how our guiding team tells one cat from another. It's one of the most requested experiences at the lodge, and for good reason, there are few places let you get this close to understanding a jaguar's daily life without ever needing to see one in person.

Your Stay Supports the Work

Protecting the jaguar means protecting the whole rainforest it depends on. Every guest stay contributes directly, supporting trail upkeep, ranger patrols, and rainforest restoration across Gallon Jug Estate. Through land stewardship, research partnerships, and a sustainable-tourism model, Chan Chich Lodge shows that conservation and hospitality can thrive together, and every stay here helps ensure the jaguar continues to roam Belize's wild heart for generations to come.

Ready to experience Belize's best jaguar habitat firsthand? Book your stay at Chan Chich Lodge and join us in celebrating International Jaguar Day, not just on November 29th, but every day you spend in the reserve.
