Four Nights in the Belize Rainforest: A Day-by-Day Itinerary at Chan Chich Lodge

The first morning usually starts before your alarm. Howler monkeys roar from the canopy, Ocellated Turkeys pick their way across the lawn, and the old Maya plaza outside your cabana slowly fills with light.

Guests often ask how many days they need at Chan Chich Lodge. Our answer: give yourself at least four nights. That is enough time to settle into the rhythm of the rainforest, see the reserve by foot, boat, canoe and safari truck, and still have an afternoon to do nothing at all. If you want to move at a slower pace, then you can add one or two more nights. This Belize rainforest itinerary shows how four nights can unfold.

Treat it as a starting point, not a schedule.

Day 1: Arrive and slow down

Most guests reach the lodge by road. The drive from Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, heading west past Belmopan and Spanish Lookout before paved roads give way to rainforest. Our transfer is $125 per person each way, with a minimum of 2 guests per transfer. If you'd rather save time, a short domestic flight lands at Gallon Jug Airstrip in about 25 minutes, followed by a 15-minute drive to the lodge.

The private road gate is open from 6am to 6pm, so let us know your flight details and we'll plan your arrival around them. For the full journey, read The Joy is in the Journey: Getting to the Lodge.

Once you arrive, resist the urge to do everything. Walk the grassy mounds of the Maya plaza the lodge is built on, take a swim in the freshwater pool, and watch for coatimundis crossing the paths. Dinner is served from 6pm to 8pm, and Looter's Trench Bar stays open until about 9:30pm.

Still have energy? Join the 7:30pm guided Night Walk for a first look at the rainforest after dark.

Day 2: Birds at dawn, lagoon at sunset

Birders, this is your day. Meet your guide at 6am for a bird walk along more than 9 miles of groomed trails. More than 370 bird species have been recorded at Chan Chich, and the first hour of light is when the rainforest is loudest. Guided bird walks are for adults.

After breakfast (served 7am to 9am), join the 10:30am Medicinal Plants Walk. Our guides show how plants along the trail have been used for healing since the time of the Maya.

Take the afternoon slowly. Read on your veranda, borrow one of our complimentary bikes, or simply listen.

At 3:30pm, head to Laguna Verde, a spring-fed lake and one of the best places on the reserve to catch a killer sunset. Paddle out by canoe as the birds settle in for the night.

If it is a Tuesday or Thursday, finish the evening at the trail camera session, where photographer Emil Flota shares footage of the jaguars and other wild cats living around the lodge.

Day 3: The Farm, the Maya and After Dark

Start at 8:30am with the Gallon Jug Farm Tour. You'll see how the community here produces beef, produce and coffee, with plenty of birds along the way. Possibly follow with the Archaeology tour. Chan Chich sits on the plaza of an ancient Maya city, and your guide will help you read the mounds around you.

In the afternoon drive out to Laguna Seca and if your group is 4 or less, board our custom skiff for the Laguna Seca Boat Tour. Keep your eyes on the water's edge: crocodiles live here, and their eyeshine glows as the light fades.

After dinner, climb into the truck for the 7:30pm Night Drive. The night is the best chance to spot the reserve's more elusive animals, and occasionally one of its rare wild cats. We never promise a sighting, but you will be in the right place to look.

Day 4: Horseback and the highest view

At 9:00 am, saddle up for a horseback ride through Gallon Jug and the surrounding trails. Our guides will match you with the right horse, whatever your experience.

Spend the middle of the day by the pool or on the yoga deck. Then, at 3:00 pm, drive through Gallon Jug and Sylvestre Village to The Escarpment, a lookout where raptors soar over the canopy. Stay for sunset, then come back for a farewell dinner.

Prefer a big day out? Swap Day 4 for a full-day trip to the Maya cities of Caracol or Tikal, or the ATM Cave. Ask our team which fits your interests and dates.

Day 5: One last dawn

If you can, set your alarm one more time for a 6am bird walk. Then enjoy a slow breakfast before your transfer back to Belize City. Many guests leave already planning which tours they'll save for next time.

Traveling with kids?

This itinerary works well for families with children 8 to 16, with a few swaps. Formal guided bird walks are for adults, so trade the dawn walk for a short, informal nature walk on the trails or a bike ride around the lodge. Kids love the night drive, the boat tour and the canoe. For room to spread out, look at the 2-Bedroom Jungle Villa or the Family Cabana with Loft.
