Earlier this year, Malcolm Robinson, General Manager at Chan Chich Lodge, was named one of the Top 10 Most Influential General Managers Reshaping Hospitality by Entrepreneurial Outlook Magazine.

The recognition highlights Malcolm Robinson’s leadership at Chan Chich Lodge and his work redefining what “luxury” means for an eco-lodge in Belize – one grounded in conservation, community, and long-term respect for the land.

We sat down with Malcolm to talk about the award, what it takes to run a remote rainforest lodge, and how his approach to leadership continues to shape the guest experience.

Q: What did the recognition mean to you?

A: It’s an honour, but really, it’s about the people here. Chan Chich runs on teamwork – from the guides to the kitchen staff to the maintenance crew. Everyone plays a role. This award reflects their consistency and pride in what they do.

Q: You’ve managed hotels across the Caribbean. What’s different about Chan Chich?

A: This place keeps you grounded. Running a lodge this remote means you have to plan ahead and stay flexible. If something breaks, you fix it. If supplies are delayed, you adapt. That’s the reality of operating in a wild environment – it teaches patience, creativity, and respect for your team.

Q: The magazine described Chan Chich as “a model for sustainable luxury.” How do you define that?

A: For us, luxury means authenticity. It’s not about having more; it’s about experiencing something real. Guests eat food grown at Gallon Jug Estate, drink coffee roasted nearby, and wake up to the sounds of the forest. That connection between people, place, and purpose is what sets us apart.

Q: You’ve said sustainability is about people as much as policy. What does that look like day to day?

A: Sustainability starts with local leadership. Many of our staff have been here for decades. They know the land, the guests, the systems. They’re now training younger Belizeans who want to build careers in conservation and hospitality. That’s what keeps this place running long term.

Q: What’s next for Chan Chich Lodge?

A: We’ll keep refining what we do well – maintaining high standards, improving resource management, and deepening guest experiences. We’re not focused on getting bigger. We’re focused on staying true to what makes Chan Chich unique.

Malcolm’s leadership style is practical and purpose-driven, grounded in teamwork, resourcefulness, and respect for the environment. His recognition from Entrepreneurial Outlook Magazine confirms what guests and staff already know: that thoughtful management and genuine hospitality can thrive together, even in the most remote parts of Belize. Guests often notice it from day one – the small details, the care in the service, the sense that everything runs with quiet intention.  That’s Malcolm’s influence.

Plan your stay at Chan Chich Lodge and experience first-hand what makes this place, and the people behind it, so special.
