Belize Wildlife You Might Encounter at Chan Chich

The rainforest surrounding Chan Chich Lodge is alive with movement, sound, and color. Whether on a guided night walk, a thrilling night safari drive, or even an early morning birdwatching tour, you never know what you might spot.

Common Sightings

Peccaries – These pig-like creatures, found in two varieties (white-lipped and collared peccaries), sometimes roam in herds near the lodge.

Coatimundis – Playful and social, these raccoon relatives are frequently seen foraging in the underbrush.

Ocellated Turkeys – With their dazzling iridescent feathers, these striking birds are commonly seen around the property.

Grey Foxes – Agile and curious, grey foxes are sometimes spotted during morning walks.

Spider Monkeys – Swinging effortlessly through the treetops, these primates are a favorite among visitors.

Toucans & Parrots – Their vibrant plumage and unmistakable calls add bursts of color and sound to the rainforest.

Less Common Sightings

Northern Potoo – Masters of camouflage, these nocturnal birds perch motionless, blending perfectly into their surroundings.

Ocelots – These beautifully spotted wildcats prowl the dense jungle, though their secretive nature makes them harder to spot. Of all the big cats found around the lodge, the ocelot is one of the most commonly spotted.

Pumas – Also known as mountain lions, these stealthy predators occasionally make an appearance near Gallon Jug Farm.

Rare but Possible Sightings

Jaguars – The ultimate rainforest predator, jaguars are present in healthy numbers in northern Belize. While sightings are rare, their presence is undeniable and if you do manage to spot one, like quite a few of our lucky guests, it is sure to be an awe-inspiring experience.

Lovely Cotinga – One of the most sought-after birds in the region, this bright blue beauty is a treasured sight for avid birders.
