With over 350 bird species recorded on the property and surrounding Gallon Jug Estate, Chan Chich is a dream destination for birdwatchers looking to spot vibrant toucans, melodious manakins, secretive tinamous, and striking parrots — all within walking distance of their cabana.
What Are Resident Birds?
Resident birds are species that live in the area year-round, nesting, feeding, and raising their young in the forests of Chan Chich. Unlike migratory species that only visit for part of the year, resident birds are a reliable part of every birding outing — and their behaviors offer deeper insight into the ecology of the
Belizean rainforest.
Resident Birds at Chan Chich Lodge
Here are just a few of the incredible species you may encounter during your stay with us:
- Keel-billed Toucan – Belize’s national bird and a true icon, often seen perched near the lodge at dawn and dusk.
- Ocellated Turkey – A prehistoric-looking bird with iridescent feathers and a proud strut, often spotted on our trails.
- Slaty-tailed Trogon – With its deep red belly and emerald-green back, it’s a forest favorite.
- Red-lored Parrot – Loud, colorful, and full of personality.
- Great Curassow – Often seen roaming freely on the lodge grounds — a guest favorite!
- White-whiskered Puffbird – Small, cryptic, and known for its still hunting posture.
- Rufous-tailed Jacamar – Like a miniature hummingbird-kingfisher hybrid, often flashing through sunlit clearings.
- Plain Chachalaca – A noisy and social bird, usually heard before seen.
- Tinamous – Shy ground dwellers whose haunting calls echo through the morning mist.
- Violaceous Trogon – A flash of purple in the canopy for those with sharp eyes.
Best Times for Birdwatching
Resident birds can be seen year-round, but your best chance to see the most species is during early morning (just after sunrise), late afternoon (before sunset), and on quiet midday canopy walks (especially in shaded forest areas). Seek them out at any of the following locations:
- Main Trails & Lodge Grounds: Ideal for toucans, parrots, and turkeys.
- Creekside Paths: Look for trogons, manakins, and hummingbirds.
- Laguna Verde Area: Home to herons and puffbirds.
- Early Morning Walks: When many resident species are most active and vocal.
Guided birdwatching walks and our weekly Trail Camera Tuesdays also offer fun glimpses into what’s been spotted recently.
Why Resident Birds Matter
Resident birds are always present. They serve as critical indicators of the health of the ecosystem. At Chan Chich, the presence of so many thriving resident birds shows how well-preserved and protected this ancient rainforest truly is.
Whether you’re a casual observer or a lifelong birder, the chance to observe resident species in their natural environment is a highlight of every trip to Chan Chich Lodge. Bring your binoculars, camera, and sense of wonder — and prepare to be amazed.
