The Belize Maya Forest Reserve, home of Chan Chich Lodge, offers an immersive rainforest experience like no other. Like most things, the forest shifts with the seasons, meaning that the time of year can certainly shape those experiences. That’s true whether you’re a birder chasing lifers, a nature photographer, or simply a traveler seeking serenity. While our Belize jungle lodge is open year-round, the country’s climate and seasonal changes can influence wildlife activity, trail conditions, and much more, making certain months ideal for specific adventures. For that reason, we’ve crafted a month-by-month guide to help you plan the perfect rainforest escape based on your interests.

January – February

Best for: Hiking, Wildlife Viewing, and Clear Skies

Belize eco-tourism packing

These are the driest months of the year in Belize, offering comfortable temperatures and minimal rain. For guests who want to enjoy long hikes along our extensive trail network or spot wildlife like deer, coatis, or even a shy ocelot, this is prime time. Trails are dry and well-maintained, and the air is crisp. It’s perfect for exploration on foot.

March – April

Best for: Wildlife Photography and Some Birding

Late dry season brings thinner foliage, improving visibility for photography and wildlife spotting. Water sources become fewer, concentrating animals at known spots—great for sightings. Additionally, you may witness the early arrival of migratory birds, as well as active resident species preparing for nesting. The lighting conditions at this time of year are often superb for photographers.

May – June

Best for: Birding (Spring Migration and Nesting Season)

This marks the peak of spring migration, making it one of the best times to visit Chan Chich for birding. With over 350 bird species recorded in the area, including rarities like the Lovely Cotinga and Ornate Hawk-Eagle, spring is an incredible time to explore the canopy and forest edge with binoculars in hand. Check out our blog on top birds to spot at Chan Chich to prepare for your trip.

July – August

Best for: Adventure in Nature

Orange Walk travel guide

Although the rainy season begins, showers are often brief and fall in the late afternoon or evening. The forest is vibrant and green, and wildlife activity remains high. This is a good time for guests looking to experience the rainforest in its lushest state. Fewer travelers also mean a more private and peaceful stay.

September – October

Best for: Hardcore Birders and Solitude Seekers

Sustainable tourism Belize

This is peak fall migration, and while these months fall within the wetter part of the year, they are also among the most rewarding for serious birders. Many neotropical migrants pass through or rest in the Belize Maya Forest during this period. Plus, Chan Chich tends to be especially tranquil this time of year, offering a true sense of wilderness and exclusivity.

November – December

Best for: Comfortable Weather and Wildlife Watching

As the rains taper off and the dry season begins, wildlife becomes increasingly active. This is a great time to experience a mix of what Belize offers—migratory birds, fresh jungle air, and easier hikes. The forest floor begins to dry, making trails more accessible, and the temperatures are cool and pleasant.

Bonus: December at Chan Chich offers a unique chance to celebrate the holidays off-grid, surrounded by nature and far from the crowds.
