For many guests visiting Chan Chich Lodge, one of the most interesting moments of their stay may not happen on a trail or during a safari drive, but while gathered around a screen watching wildlife footage captured deep within the rainforest.
A jaguar silently walking through the darkness. A family of white-lipped peccaries crossing a forest road. A curious margay pausing in front of the camera before disappearing back into the jungle.
These moments offer a rare glimpse into the hidden life of the Maya Forest — and they are all part of Chan Chich Lodge’s evolving trail camera project.
How the Trail Camera Project Began
The trail camera initiative at Chan Chich Lodge originally began as a collaborative effort with Savia Fund. The partnership had a goal of documenting wildlife activity in the surrounding rainforest ecosystem.
At the time, the cameras served primarily as a conservation and monitoring tool, helping researchers and conservation partners better understand the movement and diversity of wildlife species throughout the region.
Because Chan Chich sits within one of the largest protected tropical forest systems north of the Amazon Basin, the property offered an ideal location for long-term wildlife monitoring.
Very quickly, however, the cameras began capturing extraordinary wildlife activity.
Revealing the Hidden Wildlife of the Maya Forest
The rainforest is full of life, but much of it remains unseen.
Many species within the Maya Forest are naturally elusive, nocturnal, or highly sensitive to human activity. Even guests spending days exploring the reserve may never realize how active the forest becomes after dark.
Trail cameras changed that.
Over time, the project documented an incredible range of species, including:
- Jaguars
- Pumas
- Ocelots
- Margays
- Tapirs
- White-lipped peccaries
- Tayras
- Coatimundis
- Great curassows
- Ocellated turkeys
- And countless other rainforest species
The footage provided not only exciting wildlife encounters, but also valuable insight into animal behavior, movement patterns, and ecosystem health.
For many guests, seeing these animals on camera creates a deeper appreciation for the fact that the rainforest surrounding Chan Chich is not simply scenic — it is ecologically alive and functioning at a remarkably high level.

From Conservation Tool to Guest Experience
As the project evolved, the trail cameras became more than just a monitoring initiative.
They gradually became one of the most unique guest experiences at the lodge.
Today, wildlife footage captured from the cameras is often incorporated into presentations and discussions at Chan Chich, helping visitors better understand the biodiversity of the Maya Forest and the importance of conservation efforts within the region.
Guests frequently discover that animals they hoped to see during their stay may have passed through the property only hours earlier.
That connection between people and wildlife has become one of the most meaningful aspects of the program.
Continuing the Project Independently
While the trail camera initiative began in collaboration with Savia Fund, Chan Chich Lodge now independently maintains and expands the program. This is part of its ongoing commitment to wildlife awareness, conservation, and guest education.
The growing archive of wildlife footage has also become an important storytelling tool. The rainforest is filled with stories happening every moment. Trail cameras allow us to witness a small part of that hidden world.
From apex predators like jaguars to the smaller creatures that quietly shape the ecosystem, footage captured at Chan Chich Lodge continues to reveal just how interconnected and extraordinary the Maya Forest truly is.
For many guests, that glimpse into the unseen life of the rainforest becomes one of the most unforgettable parts of their Belize journey.
