Meet Belize’s Wild Cats
Belize is home to five species of wild cats. At Chan Chich Lodge, guests frequently encounter some of the most iconic ones during guided tours, especially our Night Drives and early-morning expeditions.
Jaguar (Panthera onca)
The star of Belize’s rainforest. Known for their strength, beauty, and elusive nature, jaguars are spotted here more often than almost anywhere else in the region. While sightings are never guaranteed, our trail cameras often capture their majestic presence.
Puma (Puma concolor)
Also called cougars or mountain lions, pumas are powerful, solitary cats that roam the forests around Chan Chich. They are primarily active at night and in the early morning hours.
Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis)

Small but stunning, the ocelot is a beautifully patterned cat often encountered during our driving tours. These agile hunters are more active at night and are often curious about safari vehicles.
Margay (Leopardus wiedii)
Known as the “tree ocelot,” margays are rare, elusive cats that are perfectly adapted for life in the canopy. While sightings are extremely uncommon, our rich forest habitat makes them possible.
