With almost half a million acres of protected forest surrounding it, Chan Chich Lodge in Belize is a birding destination with much to offer. In fact, some 360-plus species of birds have been recorded at the lodge and in its surrounding areas. Offering opportunities to spot rare species like the Lovely Cotinga and the Ornate Hawk-Eagle alongside more common finds like the Northern Potoo, Great Curassow, and Ocellated Turkey, there are plenty of reasons why this Belize birding lodge should be at the top of your list of destinations for 2025.

Birding in the Tropics at Chan Chich

Sitting on a private 30,000-acre reserve, Chan Chich is as remote and as far-flung as they get. Thanks to this, the lodge boasts some of the most authentic and untamed nature and wildlife experiences in the country. The same can be said when it comes to tropical birding. Within those 30,000 acres, varied landscapes, including verdant rainforests, present the perfect opportunity to check a myriad of species off your birding lists. And for avid birdwatchers who may have a specific lifer in mind, our skilled guides are prepared to point out and accompany you to specific destinations.

Birding Habitats Found at the Lodge

Gallon Jug Farm

There’s much more than meets the eye when it comes to Chan Chich. Beyond the thatch roofs of the main building and guest cabanas, there lies a world of natural settings waiting to be explored. Hop in one of our custom safari vehicles with a guide and pay a visit to Gallon Jug Farm. While along the way you might spot a Roadside Hawk or two, the wide open farmland is also perfect for spotting species like cowbirds. Additionally, the fringes of the forest that surround the farm are where toucans, parrots, woodpeckers, and some hawks are commonly found.

Laguna Seca

The large spring-fed lake found just a few miles away from the lodge is a great spot for birding. Grab your binoculars or ask a guide to set up the scope on the dock and enjoy looking out over the water for some of your favorite species, including hawks, herons, egrets, and vultures.

The Lodge

Near the lodge itself, Ocellated Turkeys and various hummingbird species roam about. Meanwhile, just steps away, the lush rainforest gives guests the chance to try and spot everything from Crested Guans and Chachalacas to Warblers and Trogons. This area is especially lively in the early mornings and is a favorite for guided morning walks and drives.

The Escarpment
